Your Guide To All-On-4® Aftercare

Everything You Need To Know About Looking After Your New Teeth

All-On-4® dental implants are the most effective replacement teeth for those suffering from dental disease or damage. Invented in the 1990s, All-On-4® dental implants minimise downtime after surgery, and is often recommended as a less painful alternative to traditional bridge dentures.

If you have All-On-4® dental implants, you’ll need to follow a careful regime to keep your new teeth clean. You’ll need to take special care to clean your gums, as food can get stuck around the areas where the bridge is attached. Having said that, it’s not much different from what you should do to take care of natural teeth.

At The Point Dental, our dental practitioners have specialised in the All-On-4® denture technique. We use Nobel Biocare implants — which have been extensively studied for All-On-4® treatment.

All-On-4® Post-op

There are two sets of post-operation instructions for All-On-4®:

  • Immediate recovery following surgery
  • Ongoing care of your new teeth

After surgery, it is important to take it easy on your mouth for a few days. All-On-4® recovery times are much faster than other kinds of dental implants, but you should still be patient with yourself. Drink plenty of water, take a few days off work if possible, and take painkillers like paracetamol when you need them. How To Clean All-On-4® Dental Implants

To keep your All-On-4® dental implants clean, and your gums healthy, you need to:

Brush your All-On-4® dental implants as though they were your real teeth

Just like with natural teeth and other dental implants, you should brush twice a day. For maximum effect, use an electric toothbrush for 2-3 minutes. Most electric toothbrushes emit a buzz when it’s time to stop brushing. Make sure you brush right up to the gum line.

Take care of your gums to protect your All-On-4® implants

Flossing is a necessary step in good oral hygiene, as it helps get rid of food which gets trapped between teeth, but it’s not the most effective method if you have dental implants.

Instead, use a water flosser. It’s up to two times more effective for cleaning All-On-4® dental implants, when compared with string dental floss. It removes up to 99.9% of plaque, and keeps your gums healthy.

Once you’ve finished using the water flosser, you can go the extra mile and use a Gum Stimulator. Designed by dental professionals to promote healthy gums, it stimulates blood flow. The rubber tip massages the gums, helping to dislodge food particles and reduce dental plaque between teeth.

Book regular check-ups

Most dental practitioners will recommend at least two check-ups per year to ensure your implants are healthy and maintaining correct placement. During these sessions, your dentist can also clean your implants, and remove plaque and tartar deposits.

Can Smoking Impact Your All-On-4® Implants?

Can there be problems with All-On-4® dental implants and smoking?

Yes. Smoking can have an impact on your recovery from getting All-On-4® implants. Smoking can increase the risk of infection, and slow the recovery rate from the All-On-4® procedure. The impact from smoking can be worse on other procedures — involving a bone graft, for instance — but certainly, there are no benefits to be had from smoking after All-On-4® surgery.

Why People Choose All-On-4® Dental Implants

Many people who need replacement teeth may suffer from bone loss. Due to the nature of All-On-4®, it preserves your jaw bone, and can be placed without causing further bone loss.

All-On-4® is also the least painful and most effective way to restore your smile. The procedure takes place over 3 days, and recovery is minimal compared to traditional dentures — which involve up to a 12 month healing period.

The implants are permanently fixed to a bridge in your mouth, so you don’t need to worry about taking them in or out. It is the closest thing to having your natural set of teeth.
