The All-on-4 Procedure: Step by Step
Consultation
We begin by taking measurements and scans of your mouth. This is also the time to ask any questions or raise any concerns about the procedure. We will provide all the necessary information and paperwork.
Pain management options are discussed at this stage. You can choose partial sedation or sleep dentistry if you have concerns about comfort during the procedure.
Day 1: Preparing the Mouth and Placing the Implants
You attend our in-house general anaesthetic facility in Point Cook, where our team works closely together to ensure your comfort throughout.
The first step involves preparing your mouth for the implants:
- Any remaining teeth are removed from the jaw
- Areas affected by disease are cleaned and treated
- The jaw bone is prepared to accept the new teeth (All-on-4 bone reduction)
- The four implants are placed
- Wounds are closed with dissolvable stitches
- A further anaesthetic is administered before you wake, so there is no pain on waking
Day 2: Fitting and Adjustments
The bridge is temporarily screwed in so you can see how the new teeth look. We check the bite and carry out speech tests to ensure the implants do not affect how you speak. Small adjustments are usually made at this stage to improve comfort and function.
Day 3: Final Placement
The prosthetic teeth are permanently secured in place. You can expect immediate function from this point. This is a straightforward appointment that does not require anaesthetic.
Follow-Up Appointments
A follow-up is scheduled two weeks after surgery, then every two months for the following six months. During these visits, we check healing, implant alignment, bite, and ensure you are comfortable with the result. Any remaining stitches are removed at this stage.
Recovery
Unlike traditional dentures, All-on-4 implants are functional straight after surgery. Some swelling and discomfort in the weeks following the procedure is normal. This can usually be managed with paracetamol, ibuprofen, or prescription painkillers if needed.
