Your teeth play an important role in your overall health. They enable you to eat and speak comfortably, and their condition can affect how you feel day to day. When teeth are damaged or missing due to decay or infection, it can have a wider impact on both your wellbeing and your finances.
Dental implants have advanced significantly in recent years. All-on-4 dental implants offer a fixed, permanent alternative to traditional implants and dentures, with a shorter recovery time and no bone grafting required.
What Are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that integrates with your jawbone. It looks, feels, and functions like a natural tooth. After the root is placed into the jawbone, a crown is attached and matched to your existing teeth.
There are two main types:
- Endosteal implants: placed directly into the jawbone. Made of titanium and shaped like small screws. This is the most common type.
- Subperiosteal implants: placed under the gum but on or above the jawbone. These may be used for patients who do not have sufficient natural bone.
How Are All-on-4 Implants Different?
All-on-4 implants are designed for patients with significant tooth loss, decay, or discomfort from dentures. Key differences from traditional implant methods include:
- Only four implants per arch, compared to six to eight with conventional methods
- No bone grafting required, which means less downtime
- Treatment completed within 1 to 3 days
- 98% success rate
Two implants are placed at the front of the jaw and two at the back at a 45-degree angle. This supports the full arch and helps protect against jawbone loss. The implants are fixed securely and do not slip or shift like removable dentures.
Four Ways All-on-4 Implants Can Improve Your Health
Restored Function and Comfort
All-on-4 implants allow you to eat without restriction, speak clearly, and go about your day without the discomfort or insecurity associated with damaged teeth or loose dentures. They provide a permanent solution that feels natural and comfortable.
Low Maintenance
Unlike dentures, which may need refitting or replacing over time, All-on-4 implants are fixed in place. They do not loosen or shift. Once a year, your dentist will remove the prosthesis to check that the teeth and jaw tissue are healthy.
Simple Oral Hygiene

All-on-4 implants are cared for much like natural teeth. Brush regularly with toothpaste and use mouthwash as needed. Some extra care is required when flossing around the gum line, and your dentist will show you how to do this.
Reduced Risk of Associated Health Issues
Missing or damaged teeth can increase the risk of conditions such as periodontal disease, which has been linked to strokes, heart attacks, and diabetes. Bacteria from the mouth can enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation and infection elsewhere in the body. Mouth cancer risk can also increase when oral health is neglected. All-on-4 implants restore the mouth to a healthier state, and when combined with good oral hygiene, can help reduce these risks.
Who Is Suitable for All-on-4?
All-on-4 may be suitable if you:
- Are missing all or most of your teeth
- Have advanced gum disease and loose teeth
- Find dentures uncomfortable or unstable
- Have been told you may not have enough bone for traditional implants
