What Is The Recovery Time For All-On-4® Dental Implants?

One of the most common concerns patients have about dental implants is the recovery process. For many, the expectation of a long or painful recovery can feel like a barrier to treatment.

The reality with All-on-4 implants is that recovery is shorter and more manageable than most patients expect, particularly when compared to traditional implant methods. Here is what you can expect.

What Are All-on-4 Dental Implants?

All-on-4 is an advanced implant technique that replaces an entire arch of teeth. Four implants are placed into the jaw, and a full set of fixed teeth is attached to those implants.

How Many Surgeries Are Required?

Some dental implant procedures are carried out in stages, with separate healing periods between each step. Patients undergoing conventional implants that require bone grafting, for example, may need several surgeries over a longer timeframe.

With All-on-4, the procedure is typically completed over three consecutive days. There is one recovery period rather than multiple, and you leave with a fixed, functional set of teeth.

How Does All-on-4 Recovery Compare to Other Implants?

Other types of dental implants may require bone grafting, which can involve significant discomfort and a recovery period lasting several months.

All-on-4 does not require bone grafting. Recovery times are considerably shorter, and discomfort is minimal by comparison. Some swelling in the affected area is normal and typically subsides within around three days.

Is All-on-4 Recovery Painful?

There is a common misconception that recovery from All-on-4 is very painful. In most cases, patients experience a dull ache over a few days from swelling, but the discomfort is relatively mild compared to traditional implant procedures. Pain can usually be managed with paracetamol, ibuprofen, or stronger medication if needed.

What to Expect During Recovery

Recovery from All-on-4 is generally straightforward. Because implants have been placed into the jaw, some swelling and soreness over the first few days is expected. This typically settles quickly, and within three days most patients have a functional set of teeth in place.

We recommend taking at least one to two days off work after the procedure. During that time, staying hydrated and resting are important.

Are There Ever Delays to Recovery?

The majority of All-on-4 procedures are successful. Because a significant amount of time is spent on planning and fitting, only minor adjustments are usually needed, and these do not typically affect recovery timelines.

Working with a qualified and experienced team is the best way to support a smooth recovery. At The Point Dental, we have treated many patients through this process and are experienced in guiding recovery at every stage.
