Types of Dental Implants & How to Know Which is Right For You

If you are considering tooth replacement, understanding your options is an important first step. Dental implants offer a durable, natural-looking alternative to traditional bridges or dentures, and there are several types to suit different needs.

At The Point Dental, we help patients choose the right implant solution based on their oral health, bone density, comfort, and long-term goals. Below is an overview of the main types of dental implants and what each one involves.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are replacement teeth fixed into the jaw using titanium roots. They offer a more natural feel and appearance compared to traditional dentures. Modern implant techniques are minimally invasive, allowing for faster healing and reliable long-term results.

An implant consists of three parts:

  1. The implant itself, a titanium post placed into the jawbone
  2. An abutment, which connects the implant to the crown
  3. The crown, a natural-looking artificial tooth that replaces the missing tooth

Types of Dental Implants

Depending on your bone density and treatment goals, there are several implant options available.

Single Tooth Implants

A single tooth implant replaces one missing tooth using a single implant and crown. It helps maintain the shape of your gum and bone, and blends naturally with the surrounding teeth. Traditional bridges or dentures may also be considered, particularly if adjacent teeth need restoration or if bone density is a concern.

Implant-Supported Bridge

An implant-supported bridge is suited for patients missing more than one tooth. A few strategically placed implants support a bridge that replaces multiple teeth, without requiring a separate implant for each one. This makes it a less invasive and more cost-effective approach while still providing stability and function similar to natural teeth. A traditional bridge or dentures may be preferred if bone density is limited or a less invasive option is desired.

Implant Overdentures

Implant overdentures are retained by two to four dental implants, offering improved stability, chewing function, and comfort compared to traditional dentures. They snap onto implants placed in the jawbone but can still be removed for cleaning. While they still rest on the gums, they are significantly more secure than conventional dentures.

For a more affordable option, traditional dentures remain effective. For a fully fixed solution, All-on-4 dental implants are secured into the jaw without the need for daily removal.

All-on-4 Dental Implants

All-on-4 implants provide a fixed, permanent solution for replacing all missing teeth using just four implants per arch. The result is a stable, natural-looking set of teeth, typically delivered within one to three days. This approach is commonly used for patients missing most or all of their teeth and offers a faster, more affordable alternative to traditional implant methods with a high success rate.

If you would prefer a removable option, traditional dentures or implant overdentures may be worth considering. To learn more about All-on-4 implants, contact us today.

Zygoma Dental Implants

Zygoma dental implants attach to the cheekbone rather than the jawbone, making them suitable for patients with significant bone loss or low bone density. They provide an alternative to bone grafting, which can be a more complex and uncomfortable procedure, and allow for a quicker, more predictable treatment process.

Dental Implant Techniques

There are several techniques used depending on how much bone is available in the jaw.

Endosteal implants are placed directly into the jawbone, where the titanium post bonds with the bone over time and acts as the root of the replacement tooth.

Subperiosteal implants sit under the gum but above the jawbone. They are suited for patients who do not have sufficient natural bone to support a standard implant.

Bone grafting involves adding bone or bone-like material to the jaw to create a solid foundation for an implant. Over time, the graft integrates with the existing bone, providing the support needed for successful placement. This procedure is not required for All-on-4 or zygomatic implants, which are designed to work without grafting.

Things to Consider

Risk Factors

While dental implants are a reliable solution for many patients, certain factors can affect outcomes. Smoking, some medications, and health conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes may impact implant success. Good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are important for maintaining the health and longevity of your implants. During your consultation, we will review your dental history and discuss any potential risk factors.

Cost

We offer flexible payment options and support with early release of superannuation for eligible treatments. Cost is an important consideration, and we take the time to help you understand the pros and cons of each option so you can make a decision that suits your needs and budget.
