Enamel is the hardest part of the human body; teeth are designed to be tough and durable but they are not invincible. Generally speaking, tooth damage is caused by one of three things: grinding, acid erosion and excessive force.
Stress, anxiety and sleep apnoea can cause bruxism – when teeth grind, clench and gnash together. Malocclusion (an unaligned bite or teeth) leads to uneven pressure being placed on teeth. These conditions grind the tooth structure, wearing down enamel and eventually causing cracks and irreversible damage. You can stop the damaging effects of grinding by seeking treatment from your dentist.
Acidic foods and drinks erode enamel and eat away at teeth. Items like citrus juices, energy and sports drinks and anything sugary feed bacteria in the mouth that make harmful acids, degrading teeth and causing cavities. Acid reflux exposes teeth to stomach acids, having the same effect. Left unchecked and untreated, this will eventually lead to severe tooth infection, often requiring extraction. Limit acidic and sugary foods and drinks to minimise enamel erosion. If you do eat or drink something sugary or acidic remember to rinse your mouth out with water and stick to an oral hygiene program. It’s important to see your dentist twice a year for a check-up and clean as even brushing and flossing isn’t 100% effective.
Chewing on hard food or objects, such as ice or pens, can crack and damage teeth. Impacts from sports or accidents can also severely damage and even knock out teeth. Always wear a fitted mouthguard when playing sports. You can’t always avoid an accident but don’t use your teeth as tools or put them in unnecessarily tough situations.
