Treatments for gap teeth

Gaps or spaces between teeth not only affect the cosmetic appearance of your teeth but can cause issues such as tooth decay. This is caused by food and bacteria becoming lodged in gaps or spaces.

What are my options?

Every dental case is different, and we will need to see you for a personalised consultation, in general we can offer Porcelain veneers and dental bonding to solve the issues associated. Orthodontic treatment may also be recommended in severe cases.

Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a specialised form of dentistry that is concerned with the placement of teeth and the alignment of arches. Patients who have gaps or crooked teeth may benefit from braces or Invisalign to straighten teeth and close gaps.

Traditional braces

Traditional braces are made up of metal brackets and wires which apply gentle pressure to each tooth, gradually moving them into the desired position. Braces are ideal for severe cases as they are able to close wide gaps and moved individual teeth into position.

Invisalign

Invisalign works in a similar manner, except instead of metal brackets and wires it uses a series of clear plastic aligners. Every two weeks the patient replaces their aligners with a new pair which is slightly different, moving as their teeth do. This treatment is ideal for adult patients as it is a far more discreet method of straightening compared to the traditional braces. Removable aligners are also easy to keep clean as you can simply take them out to brush your teeth as normal and pop them back in again.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers work in a similar manner to fake fingernails. They are thin porcelain shells which are bonded to the visible side of the tooth. This method covers up any imperfections on the underlying tooth including gaps, cracks, chips or oddly shaped teeth.

Patients often opt for veneers as the treatment provides a more immediate fix to their gaps compared to lengthy orthodontic treatments. Veneers can be placed in only two appointments with some time in between to allow for the custom creation of the veneers.

Veneers are colour matched to your surrounding teeth to ensure a seamless transition. We want your treatment to look as natural as possible.  Often, patients receive a teeth whitening treatment before the receive veneers. This is because veneers cannot be whitened and patients often would prefer their base colour to be slightly whiter than their natural teeth. We also assess teeth for any decay or damage before placing veneers to ensure the longevity of the treatment.
